About us

Twenty years of walking beside families

Mamatoto means "mother and child." Everything we do begins with the belief that every family deserves to be seen, supported, and celebrated.

Our story

How we began

In 2004, Tolewa Oyewole and Terie Boles, both traditional midwives and holistic practitioners, created Mamatoto Childbirth Alliance as a resource and information center for families seeking birth support, wellness guidance, and community care.

Over two decades we have walked alongside countless families through pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and beyond, always grounded in ancestral wisdom and the belief that every family deserves compassionate, culturally grounded care.

As our city grows and changes, so does our mission. Today we reach further through Mamatoto Institute and Annette's Daughter, a nonprofit initiative dedicated to women and families who need us most.

What guides us

Our values

Ancestral wisdom

Traditional midwifery, plant medicine, and the knowledge held by our elders guide how we care for families.

Maternal health equity

Every mother deserves safe, respectful, culturally grounded care, no matter her income, background, or circumstances.

Community first

We meet families where they are and build care with them, not for them. Every voice in the circle matters.
